Alexander's Big Day

As many people know, we had been waiting and waiting for Alexander's wheelchair to come in. As parents, it was heartbreaking to see Alexander had no independence in his life. We knew once his wheelchair was here, he might feel a little more independent. We finally got the call the week of Christmas, and the pick up day was set. We were to be at Riley at 9 am on Wednesday December 30 to get it. We had to get up extra early that morning to make sure we got down there on time! When we walked in the room with his wheelchair, Alexander's face just lit up. He knew exactly what the wheelchair was and couldn't wait to get in it! After all the fitting and parent instructions were done, we put him in it and drove him out into the big hallway! He immediately put his hand on the joystick and went. After us making a few program changes and he had a little more practice in the hallway, it was time to go. It was so strange because neither one of us had to pick him up and carry him out.... he drove himself right out of Riley! It was a great moment as a parent to see our child as happy as Alexander was! He drove down the hallways like a little pro! Much more practice is needed, but he is happy and we are happy! For the first time in his life... he has a little independence!!!

  2. I think our boys are only a month or so apart and I am so excited Alexander is enjoying his independence! Nicholas will hopefully be getting his chair soon. What a super cute boy you have! What type SMA does he have?
